Happy 24; Isabelle Adjani

A big day in the Gorman household. Carol and I are celebrating our 24th wedding anniversay. It was life in the fast lane as always for us, lunch at our favorite cafe and then a half hour or so in Half Price books. As I said to my lovely bride at lunch, and obviously meant it, "You've done the impossible. Showed me how to grow up a little and be slightly less suicidal than I was when we met." As Al Collins and I were e-mailing this weekend, we've realized our dreams of becoming full-time writers. And for me, better late than ever, finding the woman I'd always hoped to find.

Isabelle Adjani

Ed: When Isabelle Adjani was brought over here from France to do the sinfully-neglected film The Driver, the hype was that she was the most beautiful actress in the world. For once I beleived the hype. She has the ability to stun simply by looking into the camera. I always assumed that anybody as talented and elegant as Adjani had to have a pretty contented life. Not that I followed her life story. Movie magazine stuff doesn't do much for me. But the other night I happened to be looking through a long article on French noir films and came across this sobering paragraph about her:

From French Noir:

Another perennially beautiful French actress who obviously made a pact with the Devil somewhere along the line; she must be as old as the hills by now and still looks like she's in her twenties.

Not that this has always helped her. While she remains a successful actress in France, her attempts at breaking into the American market (eg., Ishtar) have been forbiddingly disastrous. Her mixed Algerian and German background and public criticism of the French National Front's xenophobia have made her the target of various French right-wing groups, which in a 1986 defamation campaign had momentarily convinced France that Isabelle had died of AIDS. Later she incurred the wrath of the Muslim world after reading from The Satanic Verses at the 1989 Césars and generally criticizing Islamic fundamentalism in Algeria. Then in 1995, shortly after giving birth to his son, she was reportedly dumped via fax by actor Daniel Day Lewis.

Some people just can't get a break no matter how good-looking they are.

Congratulations to you and Carol. A half-hour or so in Half-Price Books is my idea of a great way to spend an anniversary. Judy, unfortunately, doesn't agree.

Congrats, Ed. On both your marriage and living the dream. (Not that marriage isn't a dream...)
